BeOS.

osbos.org "усыновлён"
Posted: liilliil -
Deej.
Haiku OS. BeUnited
Haiku.
beunited.org disestablished officially
Posted: Deej - Thursday January 04 2008 - 17:30
In what should come as very little surprise to the community, beunited.org is being officially disbanded and disestablished.
As a member of the BeOS community for over a decade, I felt that a final word should be placed on the site rather than just letting the site sit as it has for well over a year.
beunited.org (previously BeUnited) began back in 2000 as a portal for application development on the BeOS platform. It sponsored driver development and the development of applications that were felt as needed for the success of the BeOS platform.
After the demise of Be, Incorporated, many BeOS-derivative platforms arose from the ashes: Open-BeOS (now Haiku-OS), Cosmoe, BlueEyedOS, and others. BeUnited shifted focus and incorporated as a non-profit to create a common ground between these OS platforms, while maintaining a CVS repository for applications that would have otherwise been lost and forgotten.
Over time, beunited lost members due to lack of time or major life events. The momentum slowly died down, and beunited has laid stagnant for quite some time.
After speaking with Simon, we have decided that since neither of us have had the time to continue beunited's efforts for well over a year, and do not expect to have any more time over the coming year, and since there is only one remaining OSBOS platform still active, Haiku, beunited's main focus is no longer needed in the community.
It is at this point that beunited will officially bow out of the community, even though we haven't really been active for quite some time now.
As far as the cleanup actions:
Java will progress under Haiku, as they are able to continue.
The Annotated BeBook has been turned over to the Haiku-OS website for continual maintenance there.
The beunited.org domain will remain online with all the current content for an undetermined amount of time for archive purposes.
The CVS repository will remain up for an indefinite amount of time, as Simon is able to maintain it's uptime status. If you have the resources to take over the CVS repository from beunited, feel free to do so.
The other domains previously owned by beunited are going to lapse in the future and will not be renewed. If you would like to adopt one of these domains, feel free to email me about it. The domains up for "adoption" are as follows:
- beunited.us - Expiry Date: July 26, 2007
- beunited.net - Expiry Date: July 27, 2007
- beunited.com - Expiry Date: April 6, 2008
- osbos.net, osbos.com - Expiry Date: April 20, 2008
Adoption fees may apply if you are not planning to use the domain in a BeOS-related way. If you would like to use any of these domains, or take up the beunited effort as a whole, please contact me and I'll gladly assist any transitions.
Do not fret, as beunited has spawned at least two successful projects - BeZilla, now Mozilla and it's various children. That project is also beunited's oldest project, started officially by David Reid and brought in as the first official project for BeUnited back in April of 2000. The other adopted project that is still being actively developed is the Pe Editor project. I am proud to see these projects still active and working independently without any help or guidance from the [non existent] beunited.org staff.
beunited.org wishes the Haiku developers it's best, and also would like to commend Magnussoft for taking over the development of Zeta, the commercial successor to BeOS, from yellowTab.
I personally hate to see beunited.org disappear into the ether, but I no longer have the time or motivation to continue the efforts under the beunited flag, especially since most of what we stood for in the post-Be, Inc. world has all but diverged together under Haiku, also a non-profit organization more than capable of taking this community into the future and nearing completion of a platform that was once thought to be a pipe dream. Congrats to Michael Phipps and the entire Haiku development team that have put so much sweat and tears into the community, even as it seems to fade away into oblivion. Keep it alive for us all - bring back the OS that once brought us all together - it is your duty and mandate. ;)
Take care, and see you all around the web.
